Well, Well, Well!.

The first walk of the 2026 summer programme was a ramble over Penymynydd and Pen Trywyn areas of the Great Orme to look at three natural water features. After discovering the reason why one of the steepest sections of Ty Gwyn Road is called Killen’s Hill, the group visited Rofft Quarry where we examined the limestone and sandstone strata. The piles of spoil were transported here from the Bronze Age Copper Mine excavation in the late 1980s. Walking past the distinctive knoll of Gorsedd Uchaf we descended to overlook Gorsedd Isaf the archaeological rich areas of Pen Trwyn and Ffynnon Galchog – well No. 1. After hearing the fable of Rhys and Mary and seeing a patch of the Great Orme’s only carnivorous plant, we ascended to ‘Pink Farm’ along ‘Smugglers’ path. In Victorian times ‘Pink Farm’ owners served refreshments to ramblers who flooded to the new resort of Llandudno. This was the also the childhood home of Dennis Roberts who perished on HMS Dasher during the Second World War. Continuing down the path towards St Tudno’s Church we paused to hear the story of Powell’s Well (No.2) before cutting back across the fields to White Farm and the third of the natural wells.
